About Albany

Albany is the capital city of New York State. Downtown Albany is known for its huge Empire State Plaza that has reflecting pools, an art-filled underground shopping concourse and The Egg, a striking performing arts center. The plaza is bookended by the 1800s New York State Capitol and the New York State Museum, focusing on natural and cultural history. It is also well known for The Albany Institute of History and Art is famed for its Hudson River School paintings.

Albany also features the 18th-century Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site that was the childhood home of Elizabeth Schuyler and the site of her marriage to founding father Alexander Hamilton. Moored on the Hudson River, the USS Slater, a WWII destroyer escort, is now a museum. North along the waterfront, the Corning Preserve park includes a boat launch and an amphitheater for warm-weather events. Pedestrians and cyclists share the riverside Corning Trail, which links to the long-distance Mohawk-Hudson Bike/Hike Trail. Washington Park has a lake and walking paths.

The neighborhoods of Albany include Arbor Hill, Centre Square, Pine Hills and the South End and the city is bordered on the north by the town of Colonie (along with the Village of Menands), on the west by the town of Guilderland, and on the south by the town of Bethlehem.
